Shimano 12 speed touring bike¿

https://bike.shimano.com/en-US/infor...-scylence.html

Anyone waiting, saveing up for 12 speed?

Faster lighter stronger¿

seedsbelize 11-25-18 09:32 PM

Ahh, 12 speed! I was thinking 2 x 6.

jefnvk 11-25-18 10:04 PM

Nah, my six, seven, and ten speeds have suited me just fine. I'd hate to be sitting around waiting for something that only exists in the virtual world when real world gear works great

Cyclist0108 11-25-18 10:20 PM

Good to have a few more standards introduced. I was worried we might be running short of having a wide selection of options to choose from. This is exceptionally important for establishing an industry standard.

Just what we tourists needed, a 10 tooth cog! Now we can not get more mid range choices, do get more chordal effect, do get quicker wear. All for more cost and a narrowing of working adjustment range. Like I said just what a touring rider has been seeking out. Andy

If it is a 1X12 , I would be more worried about the gearing on the high end. Let's say a 32 on the front and 11-42 on the rear, that is fine for low gearing, but for touring (as opposed to MTB), there are opportunities for speed and 32X11 won't cut it. Now, if you're talking 2X12, that might be something. 30 yrs ago I thought 3X 7 was more than enough, but I was young and foolish :p

speyfitter 11-25-18 11:48 PM

Personally I’m waiting for 10 speed front chain rings. With a 10 speed rear cassette I could have 100 gears!

NO.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rohloff_Speedhub

Huba! Huba!

saddlesores 11-26-18 05:17 AM

"the MICRO SPLINE hubs fit all current frames whether you have a boost (148mm) or non-boost (142mm) frame."

so, umm, these are for tandems? :foo:

"So what about compatibility? The MICRO SPLINE freewheels are only..."

no more cassettes? back to freewheels! :thumb:

tcs 11-26-18 08:13 AM

I'm with Caretaker. This Shimano 12 is the best argument for a Rohloff hub I've seen. :)

Shimano quietly released yet another a new Alfine 11 version this past year, the SG-S7001-11. According to Shimano, it features "Improved internal structure for better gear engagement". Maybe it won't be a skip-o-matic like the many previous iterations.

Nope. 12 speed friction shifting is unappealing and riding for weeks at a time with flat bars is even more unappealing. It's not like Shimano will make this stuff compatible between the road and mountain groups so that you can mix and match. Those days are gone.

Tourist in MSN 11-26-18 10:13 AM

I already have a 1 X 14 with a Rohloff, don't need to downgrade to only a 12 speed.

Just joking, I only have one Rohloff bike, most of my other bikes have an 8 speed cassette.

fietsbob 11-26-18 11:22 AM

being played?

2 Rohloff, 1st in a bike with 26" wheels , 2nd in 406 20" wheels ..
my winter rain bike...

same gear range, 1 a 38t , 2nd a 53t...

Industry keeps working the tifosi / customers, you keep sucking it up..

12 x 3 on a 36er is my next touring bike.

You were more poetic when you said that than I was when I saw that my 135mm frames are no longer considered current.

fietsbob 11-26-18 05:28 PM

Thru axle is where the manufacturing companies trend mongers,
want you to go, now..

Hmm, at the $700 or so the few sites that have it for preorder have the 12spd casette/RD/chain/shifter it listed at (not to mention, how many touring frames come in that rear spacing), I think I'd side with the Rohloff crowd for a bit more money.

chrisx 11-26-18 10:28 PM

Here is a touring ferame with 148mm dropouts
FLX-FR-701 ( 29er boost )

Well, it is a touring bike if you subscribe to willis bikepacking thread.

Ok the XTR xassette is over $300, and not yet in stock. Soon enough they will have xt for $89 or $110, or so.

Or like the guy on the trolley said to me eariler today, his 2005 is a lot less money to maintain and runs fine-

XTR M9100 is 1/2X12. Cassettes have whopping 45/51 tooth big cogs but with 38/28 chainrings still less range than trekking triple AFAIK.

Combine an 3x11 drivetrain with a SRAM Dualdrive (or Sturmey Archer equivalent) and you already can have 99 gears :D

Combine a Pinion with a Rohloff and you can have 252 gears.

But do they take the same oil for oil changes?

Sounds like a monster, an evil beast.

fietsbob 12-06-18 06:23 PM

In the 50s A friend's bike got 2, 3 speeds , 1 like a Trike hub 2nd chain attached to the hubshell,
driving the wheel hub..

do that with 2 NuVinci Hubs and you got double infinity..
