Deore M590 or M591 ?
After trying out the Claris FD-2403 with my hybrid triple crank (Dyna Drive 48/38/28) & brifters, I've found it not all that great for trimming in to be able to accommodate the all three rings. If I set it up to start out in the 28T, then it's not wanting to ramp up in to the 48T, If I start out in the 38T, it will not allow itself to drop to the 28T, but can go in to the 48T.
Going to trying out the either a M590 or M591, given the option, which would be the better selection? |
by set it up, I am referring to retensioning the cable starting at that aforementioned chain ring.

First, have you tried adjusting the limit screws and checked if the derailleur cage can swing far enough to cover all three rings with the cable detached? I'd be surprised if it can't be adjusted to do by backing out one or both limit screws. Second, is your front shifter triple capable?

Yes the front brifter is triple capable. I've been reading reviews of the 2403 FD being a bit difficult to tension, & it will still contact the chain if anything over 3 cogs are crossed out back from its respective front ring. Would a FD-360 be a better option? I kind of need to do something about it before Friday evening & I don't want to waste any more time with this Claris 2403. |
I can't tell you if the Deore front derailleur will work with Claris road shifters. But I've used a Tiagra FD-4603 with Claris brifters, and an FSA Omega crank with a 46-39-30 setup with no issues. Granted, it is a road crank, but if you are able to set the limit screws to teach the chainrings, it might be worth a try. I will say that I space the derailleur cage higher (10mm) with the smaller size large chainring. I know it goes against conventional wisdom but that seems to help compensate for the derailleur cage curvature. It shifts up and down smoothly and trims when needed. John |
gut feeling says to find a 10t reach fd meant for a 50 big ring, but if I cannot find one locally, I'll give a try to what I can get my hands on.

I'll double check my cable routing to ensure that isnt hanging up on anything. Last I looked it was looking good.

Suspected the brifter to be a possibility & replaced it.
All works great now. Very odd. |
