Loud freewheel clicking on Sirrus
 

I recently purchased the 2019 Sirris elite carbon and noticed the freewheel has a loud clicking noise when coasting (louder than any bike I have owned). Does everyone like the louder click? What are your thoughts ?

The Bontrager freehub on my Trek FXS6 is rather loud too, but it doesn't bother me. My old road bike had Chris King hubs with the distinctive "angry bees" freehub pawls. Loved that bike, and a quick coast could clear the bike trail in front of you as people scattered over the noise!

If everything is otherwise 'normal' -- that is, there's no obvious resistance when coasting, and the freehub engages more or less 'instantly' when you resume pedaling -- then no, nothing to worry about.

Some (many) freehubs do have a pronounced clicking when freewheeling; others don't. Chris King hubs, for example -- one of the finest hubs one can purchase -- sound like a swarm of angry bees when freewheeling.

Whether one 'likes' this noise (I don't) is a matter of personal preference. But it has nothing to do with the functionality of a particular freehub.

I like the sound my classic King hubs make because it sounds neat, but I also like silent hubs because silence is nice.

Many hubs are louder because they have more points of engagement, so there are benefits

Edit: Now that I think about it, I have/had a few hubs with louder (than Shimano) and unique sounds that I liked for that quality. White, Mavic, Campa, and Fulcrum have nice freehub sounds IMO off the top of my head

Nice to hear differing opinions on this. I personally do not mind it , but it was a different experience when I first rode it. YMMV as they say..

Once the grease starts breaking down in the hub it gets louder.

Don't be so depressive. By the time that happens the bike will be sold.

Lol. Not depressive. I'm being realistic here. It doesn't take long for a new hub to go from fairly quiet to loud.

I had a new wheel set built for my road bike last year. The first 2 weeks of riding it was fairly quiet. That 3rd week and beyond it progressively became louder and now has settled down to about as loud as it will get. All has to do with how much and what type of grease the hub was packed with from the factory.

If you take the hub apart and pack it full of a bunch of grease it will quiet it down for a bit.
