ID'ing Colnago
This Colnago frame was given to me by my riding partner. Size: 58 cm c-c. He picked it up from an ebay seller located in Santa Cruz/Aptos area of CA. Shortly later, he decided it was too small for him. So, he gifted it to me. Was repainted & decals were put on, I've subsequently built it up w/ C-Record cmpnts. 27.2 mm seatpost.
I don't know much about it's history or date of manufacture & was hoping for someone's knowledge here of the 'model/dob' of Colnagos? Decal says:Columbus SL Tubing. Previous owner hinted that it might be a 'Mexico Model'...dunno ? https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...d255e6c7ca.png https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...71bd2ab26f.jpg https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...05a0ba1ac7.jpg https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...f68b9a408a.jpg |
If it's SL it's not a Mexico, easy enough.
Looks like an early to mid 80s refinished Super. |
I’ll recommend the Group, not the venue...Colnago Owners Group on Faceblech!
A lot of knowledge there. I have a Super, but it’s SLX and a bit different. |
SLX tubing would mean you have a Conic.
(one step below the Master at the time but rarer) |
Used to be if the chain stays were crimped, it was a Super.

(one step below the Master at the time but rarer) It says SUPER (yes, in caps) on the L chain stay. I’m fairly certain that’s a 27.2 post. Yours looks very much like my 84 Super, which also has a painted fork (probably chrome originally). Does yours gave a clover on the brake bridge?

I’ll check. The remnants of the tubing decal are under the taillight mount.

@Velikus - Clover on the brake bridge is not a consistent feature. I have an 83 Superissimo without.
I don''t recall if Mexico's had a CS bridge. Features that I see indicate early '80s likely 83 on if the ST caps are flat. Decals are of an earlier vintage. https://live.staticflickr.com/7327/1...08ddd971_b.jpg1983 Colnago Superissimo on Flickr Very nice gift! I really enjoy riding mine. @RobbieTunes - I like your bike! although the color scheme is busy, it works great for me. The colors look vibrant! Beautiful. |

Very nice gift! I really enjoy riding mine. btw: I had a Superissimo exactly like yours’ (59cm) Rode it for years, Sadly, I let it go to a Forum member. Rock steady ride, even at 55 mph... I expect this red one to perform the same, although I’ve slowed it down some at 74 yrs/o 😎 Just had those new wheels built w/ FIR Sirius Rims.. . 1983 Superissimo https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...7d7c06e459.jpg https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...8445fa20b1.jpg |

I’ve never even seen one with panels in person. Somehow, I always end up with the fades..... Have you noticed the low-grade “fanaticism” of many Colnago owners? (said fondly, and for lack of a better word) They are dedicated, abundant, and pretty crazy about their stuff. Worldwide enthusiasm. I’m not a Facebook fan, but the owners’ group there is extremely interesting. I think the Mapei owners alone are bigger than most bike cults. |
