Gonna get the old lemond upgraded with new paint as it is chipped and got some rust at BB area
wanna keep simple but bold any suggestions?

In keeping with the TdF currently underway, do everything in pure, solid, retina burning yellow.

Are you going with the same colors and replacing the decals?

Yes to decals. But paint colors i am un sure what to do. I want the 853 decal and lemond the name of bike I Cannot find on line

Cerakote is the future of bike paint. Find a qualified applicator. Mix the colors with gloss white to get a pearly finish.

I was reading about it the other day. It seemed expensive, compared powder-coating at this point, and I didn't see near the glossiness or range of colors. I didn't do a lot of research, and would happily be corrected. Apparently, by far the most durable coating presently available.


OP- I think the current color scheme is pretty nice! You realize you might be able to find another Lemond in a different color for what a mid range paint job might cost... I know, it wouldn't be new paint but...*

*Speaking as an owner of a 2002 silver front/ metallic blue rear Zurich, that I just decided to hang onto because of the smoooth ride:D. Even though I find the cockpit unattractive and clunky looking.:o

I have grown found of the bike it was a craigs list find $200 for the bike with full dura ace, extra wheels, a nice bike floor stand & speedplay pedals. It is a great fit, works well and I have no desire to change it out but can get a professional paint job for under $200. The guy painted my old Eddy Merckx titanium in a glossy flake orange years ago. It was gorgeous. It is my birthday gift to me and less than a new $2K bike. The current paint scheme is not bad but I would like more flash.

Wow! I did ok, 4 years ago, at $300 for the Zurich, with Ultegra. Yours was a steal. And very nice price on the paint job, is it holding up ok?

Same colors but with metal flake or maybe the black be painted so as the light changes so does the black color.

I feel like red is the obvious answer.

Black, green and yellow to match the 853 decal.

Custom blend of Zombie Green and Gloss White mixed and applied by Paint by Todd in Sellingrove, PA. IIRC, it was about $350 four years ago.

Painted Ti Bike blaspheme!

Just buy a new bike by the time you pay someone $500 to paint that old heavy steel frame and old components that frame is gonna start rusting again.

"Blaspheme" is a verb.

Also the dropouts on that ride are amazing and the lettering being the ti frame color under the powder coat is pretty bad ass too. The last year Salsa made the Colossal Ti they painted it. Suffice to say it didn't sell very well and they ended up dropping the Colossal ti from the line up. 🙁

If you love the bike, then paint it. It's a vehicle, not always about logic, but love. Why else would somebody rebuild and restore a swiss cheese rusted out Bel Air or mustang, for when a better one could be had "cheaper"? It's the love and desire.

Mine was built just before the shop started making its own dropouts. Drew was still learning to use the new computerized mill he had recently acquired. The shop is amazing. It's in his parents' former carpet cleaning business. He has a different machine for each part of the frame (e.g., head tubes, bottom bracket shells).

It's not powder coat. It's a ceramic glaze. Cerakote. Lighter and stronger than paint or powder coat. Not shown in the LOVE statue decal on the left chainstay.

The OP said it'll cost $200.
But even if it cost $500, that's $700 total in the bike with brand new paint and quality components.
That's solid value compared to anything new of equal quality.

And no a steel frame wont just start rusting right after being painted. That's absurd.
