Hello JP what color is your Sport SX ande what Componets? I know my 1987 was black whith red decals and had Suntour Alpha 5000 componets, it also came in red. almost all Bianchis had the 86-87 World Champion sticker on them even my 1990 Proto frame set still touted that fact. I have a collection of catalogs going back to 1980 I'll try look your bike up if I can.

OH if it does not have index shifting it is older than 1986 or so.

Ok, I have some photos of my bike. I just got it back from the shop. It is black, and there is a sticker on it, with Piaggio on it (not sure if that is a model or not). It has a black frame, 27" wheels, the components are a mix of Suntour.

I have already done my commute on it and I am very pleased with it. I will need to get some new tires for it soon though.

It appears to be a 1982 or 1983 Bianchi Limited.

Nice looking project. What calipers did you end up installing?

Mafac 2000's (with Modolo levers). I am not happy with the way the fenders go under the fork/seat stay bridge. They suck pretty close to the wheel, then flare out a bit. There isn't much room, and I had to crimp the front to get it under the fork. I'm just going to have to futz with it a bit.

I'll add my S/N. I have a made in Japan Bianchi Limited, of Ishiwata Cro-Mo steel. It has the Takagi crank, Suntour Cyclone m-II derailers, and DiaCompe 500 brakes. The rear spacing was curiously 128mm, my guess is that was during the transition from 126 to the more common today 130mm OLD, whatever it sure made it easy to upgrade to 9 speed cassette from the 6 speed freewheel it came with.

Any way, the S/N is CS480940, and I am curious what year the bike was made.

One other note, it is silver with yellow lettering which is hard to see in person and impossible to see in pictures, kind of reminds me of those Bush/Quayle convention posters where Quayle was put in red on the blue background so it wouldn't show up in the newspaper photos. Was Bianchi similarly distancing itself from the Japanese models, or was it simply incredily poor graphics design?

Sounds like a 1984/1985 model. Does it have a Piaggio decal on the seat tube? Also, check the component date codes against the info on the Vintage-Trek website.

Hello Does your Sport Sx have shimano Sport LX and Mint Celste paint? I think it might be an '89. do you have a pic?

balindamood: do you still have the Alpha 5000 shifter and derailuers? are they in good shape? my '86 sport sx now has suntour barcons, a 600 rearderailuer (it indexes with a suntour fwheel) and chorus calipers with record levers. never got around to a full triple setup. nice ride

Muccapazza: as near as I can tell your Limited is a 1984. it was offered int he Silver/yellow and dark maroon/yellow. the condition of the decals is m ost likely due to a quality issue. or even how the bike was kept/cleaned.

Thanks for the info both of you, yeah, I checked the component codes on the derailers and brakes at the vintage trek site they correllate to 1984 as well. That silver yellow color combo is just so bad it makes me laugh, the decals may have been brighter when new, but now are the color of weak lemonade. Great bike otherwise. I'll get a picture up soon, I defy anyone to identify it as a Bianchi from a distance greater than one foot.

Piaggo is the name of the conglomerate that owned or still owns Bianchi (Italy). it does not appear on US bikes any longer as US Bianchis are made from Bianchi USA and wholly owned but licensed company seperate for the Bianchi that is in Italy. but the Reporto Corsa bike do still come from Italy.

I'll add one, though it's not old enough to be vintage it might qualify as classic. The SN on my fully lugged Reparto Corse built "Cross Project USA" is 55E102c.

I don't know the model, but it's got slightly oversized tubes which are ovalized at the BB. The original parts all seem to be 8 speed STI Dura-Ace. No tubing decals.

Thanks TMar and Bianchigirll, my Sport SX is celeste, is equipped with a biopace chain ring, and is all exage gear. It does have indexed shifting. 1988 sounds about right. Thanks again

The only one I have right now is a very old pic and it's not very good. I'll get some better ones soon, I'm waiting for some new bar tape now and the old is off.

I bought it the first year they came out, '96 IIRC, they were only sold as a frameset. The tubing is Zero Uno.

Hello when you said 'project' I was thinking of the 700c wheel mountain bikes Bianchi made in the early '90s. they were unconventional then and never caught on. now I think they would be called 29ers right?

I remember those, the industry name for them was 'hybrids'. The 29er frames are usually a true MTB while the 'hybrids' were more of a cross between a road bike and a cyclocross bike.

The "Cross Project USA" was a cyclocross frameset, it was the forerunner to the Cross Concept and the Axis. The first ones were probably the last fully lugged cyclocross frames made by anyone other than custom builders. Somewhere along the way they changed them to Tig welded though they left a couple of lugs IIRC and then finally switched to Tig only. It's hard to see in that poor pic of mine but it even has rack mounts on the front/rear dropouts (but none on the seatstays).

Hoping you guys might be able to help me out also with the year. I just purchased a Bianchi d'Italia. I have a serial number under the crank, 864537. It has a made in Italy sticker and a sticker that reads Formula Two Colombus. The components are Ofmega. The frame is black with silver lettering. I can post a picture up once I get some pictures of it.

Also just curious if I got a good deal or not - about how much do you think this is worth. It appears to have all of the original components and is free of rust?

Hi Choke no there was a differnce. in the late '80s early '90s Bianchi made a series of Project bikes which were mountain bikes with 700C wheels. they were intended to be ridden off road just like a mountain bike. mine in the pic has my 32 road slicks on it but came with 38 knobbies. they even made one with a rockshox on it.
