Freewheel Hub Free Wheeling Forward and Backwards
 

Assembled my latest adult tricycle June 1; she rode smooth for 95 miles, but during yesterday’s ride, power to the drive axle quit. It slowly happened over a mile; the gears kept going lower (7th would be off the cassette, but 6th would pull the chain back on… now 2nd and beyond is off the cassette and 1st is lined up with 7th). Not sure if that is an axle issue or derailleur adjustment, but the hub between the cassette and axle is no longer engaging. I can peddle in either direction and the chain and sprockets spin, but the tires do not. Because it is new, it should be covered by warranty. Kent International says parts are covered for 6 months, but I have to pay labor and transportation. I can’t afford that, so I need to fix it myself. Any suggestions what to look for?

It might be as simple as the RDER cable slipping.
Chain still shouldn't go off the end cog if the High Limit Screw on the RDER is properly set.

Since it's a tricycle, a pic or 2 of the cassette (freewheel?) area may be helpful so one can see just how it's mounted.

The freewheel is threaded onto a hub that fits on the axle and drives the axle through a keyway. Sounds like the set screw may have come loose and let the key slip out so it no longer transmits torque to the axle.That's where I would start looking especially as it is new.

I'd guess its a multi speed freewheel , , the bike shop can take it off clean and re oil or replace..

Unless you have all the tools in your house to do it ... freewheel remover is specific to the freewheel brand,

though lots copied Shimano over the years , (but no guarantee yours is one)

you know how to pull the rear axle out?

That was what happened. My Meridian has an intermediate axle with a freewheel hub and band brake that are adjacent. The Monterey units need to be on opposite sides of the drive axle. Lesson learned. I got her rolling smooth again; thanks for the suggestion.
