too fancy for me. at an average cost of $25/day. that would fully cover a two-year independent no-camping/no-cooking tour in this part of the world.

All you do is ride for $376.60/day. And I'll bet that doesn't include beer money.

But how far would that take you on the Katy Trail? :D

Ha! it took me exactly 47 riding days in 1991 to go from San Francisco to Boston. I recall only spending approximately $1000. (my airfare was free)

But this is Portland to Portland. Starting and ending in cities with the same name justifies the slightly higher price tag. Far greater bragging rights than the Bay City to Bean Town.

You know what else is not included? Tips for the guide staff. The site recommends tipping the team 7.5%-10% of the tip price, or $1,327-$1,769. :eek:

Also, not all meals are included: "Daily breakfast, 40 lunches and 36 dinners" 10 dinners on your own. 7 lunches on your own.

Don't overlook the fine print: " $17699 / Person, Double Occupancy / Single occupancy not guaranteed for 3-5 nights on our Cross Country trip". So you really need a partner and $40K to make this a pleasant trip.

I know a few women who would be my partner for $40K.

not really. as your ship has come in, by which i mean your brother in law's check has cleared, money is no object. book two slots on the tour...one for self, and one for your instrument. and don't forget to practice one-handed concertos, for those midnite micturating moments!

When you have $17K to toss around for a bicycle ride, what is another lousy $1,7K in tips? ;)

A friend of mine did northern tier last year with ACA, also finished in Portland Maine. This route looks quite different. I think he paid a lot less to ACA even though it was a lot more days of food that they had to provide. But he usually provided his own tent for lodging, and his tent was at the single occupancy rate.

Looks like they are cheating by taking the ferry across Lack Michigan.

I did not notice, do they give you a hefty discount on a new Trek for that price?

It looks like you get "use of a Trek Domane" for the ride, not a Domane to keep.

Here is a question. How many people that can afford $17K + for a tour can do 126 miles in a day, even if it is only one day?

The Trek tour goes through Madison WI where I live. I was curious so I checked the itinerary and found they are staying at one of the more expensive places in town, it looked like they were not scrimping on lodging in communities that are large enough to offer a choice. But the place they are staying at, I did not think of them as a bike friendly hotel so I wonder where they are keeping the bikes at night?

Pricey, but worth it.
