Where did that avatar come from?

Let me know where your avatar come from. What was the motivation for the image? What do you like about it? I know its a bit ironic coming from a guy that doesn't have one. :) Looks like I'll have to get one at some point...

I was perusing through all things Cinelli and came across this page:

ITALIAN CYCLING JOURNAL: Cinelli

Scrolled down to the fourth image from the top. Then thought to myself, "Holy cow! I found iab's avatar! Its a hand drawing of Cino Cinelli!" :D It was a nice "easter egg" fo rme since I didn't know the origin for his avatar.

I have a Miyata. I like the history of Miyata. So my pic is a Miyata logo.

Nothing really creative or secretive.

Mine was an organized charity ride in Ontario, the Bluewater Gran Fondo benefitting a local hospice, which had professional photographers on course. Chose it because it is pretty much the only good pic I have of me on a bike.

Get of of my way, all of you!
This is no place for loafers!

Homebrew01 02-24-17 09:09 AM

Frame I built many years ago for racing, and still ride.

ptempel 02-24-17 09:12 AM

@DrIsotope Ahhh! You have chosen wisely!

Edit: I like your "Non omnino gravis" - "Not at all serious" title. It reminds me of the famous Latin saying from The Handmaid's Tale book. "Nolite te bastardes carborundorum." - "Don't let the bastards get you down."

Did you grind the tubes and braze them in a jig yourself?

ptempel 02-24-17 09:25 AM

Someone had an avatar of a guy or doctor snapping a rubber glove on his hand. Was one of my favorites. Sort of like this but was a dude instead of a chick:

Yup. Just after high school. Built a jig and a couple of frames in my parent's basement.

My avatar is a reminder of that terrible incident that took 5 lives here in Kalamazoo.

Wow. Good on you for being that adventurous. I've always admired the skill and precision that framebuilders need to put out a good product.

Ah, ok. I recall the story Kalamazoo: 5 dead after truck plows into bicyclists - CNN.com Very sad. This story doesn't say, but I wonder if the driver was impared (or driving drunk). "He said that three separate police agencies received phone calls prior to the crash regarding the truck's erratic driving."

Been very happy with all of their bikes so far and anything that I have purchased through them.

Mine it of my fav bike, Concorde Astore, Champy equiped. Was custom made. I bought it as my retirement gift, from the USAF, when stationed in Germany. I lived about 5km from the Dutch border. A Dutch friend, who was a cyclist, took me to a Concorde dealer. KB.

Mine is from this image. It makes me laugh. Eddy Merckx joins the Michelin man on the podium in 1975:

Great bikes. They sponsored the PDM Pro team years ago. One of my favorite riders used to be on that team, Sean Kelly:

Don't know if its urban ledgend or not. But heard that some years he rode up to 200 races a year? Or was it days? Either way that's way too much and never knew how he did it. I also noticed that he road bikes a crunched up style (back was curved more). So I wonder how he would have done in his hey days if he rode less races and had a proper bike fit. Although looking at the image above, it looks like he has a flatter back than when he rode for KAS.

Yep, I was stationed there, at the height of his career. My Dutch buddy, inspired me to by the Concorde, as it was the Dutch PDM sponsored team. And, I still have my PDM jersey and it still fits. I bought XL, in cased I gained any in my senior years. KB

I made a quick video of my lighting setup a few years ago. The upload says 2014, but the video is older. This is the '83 Nishiki. The lighting setup has changed since then and there are two other bikes.

it's a Wenger(?) mega swiss army knife, a mechanic appreciates tools, even rather silly over the top, ones.

You're missing the "Dei" at the end of your title. "Ut In Omnibus Glorificetur Dei" - "So that in all things God may be glorified". Was a standard benedictine motto.

Mine is a pic of Pee Wee Herman from the "Pee Wee's Big Adventure" movie poster. Mainly because I don't take myself very seriously. Some day I may upload an actual pic of myself for an avatar, though.
