Another Leg Shaving Thread
If shaving a rider's legs gives an X gain in speed, will shaving only 1 leg result in X/2 (Xx0.5) speed advantage?
For this, let us discount helmets and kickstands from the equation PS we are not riding shirtless, so pit-shaves don't count gm |
As useless as the sex on a bike thread but even less imaginative. Not even a participation medal for this.:twitchy:

Racers shave as a courtesy to each other, so nobody has to look at hairy legs.

Bad jokes aside, if races can be won by a thousandth of a second I'd say its worth it. But I'm sure its mostly cosmetic. Even so, imagine a swimmer with hair on his back and legs.
At least 50 % of the audience would instantly go eeyuh and tune out. In these days of media coverage, that's the last thing sponsors want when more viewership equals more profit. |

As a non-racer I asked a racer who shaved his legs why on heck he did it. It couldn't be for a speed advantage as the physics of that made no sense to me. His answer made a lot of sense though. If you race a lot you will eventually end up in a crash and it made removing the bandages a lot less painful. No hair to stick to the scabs or to the adhesive.

I pick up a lot of road grit on my legs that my front tire churns up. Hairy legs tend to make washing out that grit more difficult.
I don't want my legs marinating in road dust, which I imagine consists of everything including asbestos from brake pads, oil, anti-freeze, transmission fluid, rubber particles from tires, oxidized steel, animal and human fecal matter, urine, vomit, blood, trash, used diapers, roadkill ... pretty much anything you can imagine being discarded intentionally or unintentionally along roadways. I would prefer to have all of that crap getting washed down the shower drain, and not hiding out on my skin and in my pores underneath (un-aerodynamic) body hair. |
Over the last two decades, my legs have gone effectively bald, so there’s no longer a decision to make. Speed has not improved concomitantly, however.

I am permanently on blood thinners, so I can use any advantage in the event of a crash. |

While the OP has a good point which seems to make sense, the problem is that if you only shave one leg that side goes a bit faster and you end up going in a circle! :roflmao:
