Well it’s anodizing, not paint. And it comes in a nifty box. And considering that the Paul Powerglide derailer sold in 1995 for $150 but is selling for from $450 to $900 today, it might not be a bad investment.

But, yes, it is somewhat silly.

Reminds me of when I first saw a set of Campy Record brakes displayed. I thought they were way too expensive to use but I could picture them under a glass topped coffee table.

I guess beauty is sin the eye of the beholder, but those Paul components are not only too expensive to use but also way too ugly for coffee table display at at my house.

That Paul stuff is really nice but the functional value may not justify the cost. Nevertheless, I'd love to see it being used on a bike. Buying it to stash away as an investment seems off-kilter to me. The maple box is a nice touch - $10 worth of wood plus a few $ for the machining probably adds $100 to the package.

Yes, i know its anodizing which is why I put paint in quotes. Also what's $150 in 1995 equivalent to in today's cost? I assume the current cost for that derailleur is in NIB condition so your 1995 $150 purchase sat in a box for 24 years doing you no good as a bike component. I still think the new group is a foolish purchase.

$250. And considering that the Paul derailer was considered to be a really bad derailer, it’s not unreasonable that they have been sitting in a box for nearly a quarter of a century. People still buy them for ridiculous prices.

Lighten up. I made this post as the joke it is meant to be. Paying $2000 for about $750 worth of parts because it has a fancy anodization job and a fancy box is admittedly dumb.

Yeah, a lot of the blanks waiting to be made ready for the CNC machine looks like poplar, but the finished box looks like maple. I wonder if they used poplar for the initial dialing in. If the finished box is truly poplar, then shame on them.

showing my age, but I still have some clothing from the 90s when purple was considered cool, but I also sure as heck will never put purple parts on any of my bikes (one of my commuters is a 90s ish bike, and is a muted purple-ish, but not half as blingy purple as these)

for some of us, well for me anyway, the 80s and 90s garish colours put me off these hues for the rest of my life.

That set is sexy as hell. Granted it is way too expensive for what it is but that limited edition stuff usually costs a bunch extra. I wonder if Mr. Paul might do those for regular folks at some point without all the pomp and circumstance. Silver and purple is a good look. 90s MTB never died!

Gorgeous set... but I'd be lying if I said the price wasn't a bit distasteful. Hopefully we'll see a bike with the set someday!

You never know. I’ve seen a Campagnolo Record 50th Anniversary Group twice in my life. I saw one in the box in 1983 and another on a black and gold bike that perfectly complimented the gold plated Campagnolo group at the Veloswap in Denver a few years ago. ‘Twas a beautiful bike!

Frankly, I’m getting real tired of dull black. My daughter has an ugly green Specialized Epic that I jokingly suggested we make uglier with purple parts. It actually looks really good. I don’t have pictures of it right now but at least it’s not black. I’ve been adding lots of color to the bikes I have just so they aren’t so dull.

ha, I've seen shots of your bikes before, but I dont recall ever noticing the multi coloured crank bolts before!
Hey, as your bikes show, goofing around with colour accents and stuff is fun, and coming from a visual background, playing around with visual stuff is all good. Makes the world less blah, and having fun and enjoying this sport of ours is what it's all about.
(forgot about my early 90s purple Ortliebs, still have one in the household and it refuses to die, although it has faded a heck of a lot)
