Is this wheel repairable (or rideable!)?

Hi! I'd like to rescue and use this 2006 or 2007 Campagnolo Eurus wheelset. Unfortunately, there is a major dent on the drive side of the rear wheel from shipping. Photos are below and I'm interested in opinions:
- is this rim repairable?
- is this wheel rideable as is?
-if neither, does anybody have a matching rim or wheel for trade/sale? (The front wheel is in excellent condition, as are hub, freehub and spokes on the rear).
thanks!

Perhaps a better question is whether the risks of riding this wheel would be worth it? Personally, I would answer no, because the middle photo shows that the wheel sidewall is compromised, so it may not hold the bead. If this is a single-walled rim, then another reason not to ride it is that the dent may burst an inflated tube.

You already knew the answer before posting. Find a new rim.

Since it’s the rear wheel I would still ride it

I wouldn’t ride that. And if I did, none of my mates would want to be behind me.

You can buy a comparable wheelset, both front and rear, for just $100.

Are you handy with a hammer? You could hammer the dent out if you were skilled and careful.

I've been been riding a set of Calimas for a few years and really like them.

Get it repaired or trash it.

Don't risk your life, it's not worth the dollar bills.

seypat 03-08-24 07:34 AM

Is the rim hooked or hookless? I've read somewhere that hitting a rock can break your rim and cause your tire to blow off even if you have a tire noodle installed. In any event, I'd trash the rim and get a new one.

rsbob 03-08-24 11:04 AM

Toss it.

That's not funny.

BOTD, we'd hammer out small dings in steel rims, but never in aluminum rims.

That rim is toast.

i agree. if a joke then not cool. the answer applies to others looking to address the same issue via searches.

pretty sure that will hold an inflated tire ok. crashed last year and did significantly more damage to a front wheel. patched up the giant hole in the tire, removed front rim brake and limped home. that wheel now serves trainer duty only.

I would ride it to get home. I might ride it during the time it takes for me to get a replacement. But I probably would be a little slower going down the twistier parts of any ride I do.

Get your money back.

georges1 03-08-24 04:30 PM

This isn't a repairable item, buy a new wheel

genejockey 03-08-24 04:32 PM

I wouldn't ride it. I'd be surprised if it doesn't wobble a whole hell of a lot.

sthurman 03-08-24 05:08 PM

Thanks for the feedback!

It has been interesting to read the variety of contributions here. Thanks! I clearly need to replace the rim and won't dare ride it without significant risk.

I'd really like a matching set of wheels, does anybody know where to find a new or used rim like this?

Eurus wheels don't have spoke holes in the rim bed. You can't get at the area where the rim is dented

Psimet2001 03-12-24 11:13 AM

Done. Replace the rim. I haven't looked in a long time but Campagnolo used to offer replacement rims that we in the industry could get. Otherwise just replace it with any decent wheel for a low price.
