The Pugsley’s obsolescence
This is little more than a rant/lamentation about the obsolescence of my Pugsley.
Since Surly no longer makes Marge Lite or Rabbit Hole rims, future wheel builds are pretty much out of the question, should I either need or desire. (I currently swap mine between full fat and 29er configs.) It’s obvious that the parts-base for this bike is slowly going extinct. 4” is no longer adequate for width, apparently. Tires are getting harder to buy too. The thing I like most about the Pugs is that I can use standard spaced MTB parts...particularly the Alfine 8. Maybe it’s time to sell it now though before it gets so obsolete that it can’t be sold. |
How often do you need new rims?
Plenty of rims available in all kind of widths. No need for Surly stuff. I bet Surly just relabels the rims anyway. |
Given that parts are still available for old French Pugs like my Peugeot PX 10, I reckon you'll be able to get parts for your new Pug for a few more years yet.

I did a cursory search for Marge Lites and Rabbit Holes. Came up pretty much empty, due to products being discontinued.
Given the unique offset of the Pugs, not just any old rim will do. 4” tires are getting pretty rare too. Not fat enough, apparently. |
The Pug currently comes with 4.3 Ednas and other brother Darryl's - symmetrical or offset 80mm, both of which are available:

If you're looking for only Surly parts, that may be true, but there are still many other choices out there that should fit your bike.
|
I think some of the chinesium carbon wheels can be ordered with custom drilling for the offset you need.
|
All of this may be true, but the fact that Surly itself is essentially no longer producing a lot of the parts that are pretty fundamental to this bike says that the writing is on the wall.

What writing? I linked to the current parts listed on their website above.
It's sorta like the idea that 26" mtb tires are obsolete. Maybe as a trend or in the magazine but you can still buy them everywhere. |
I build wheels for a living. I still have 20+ Pugs-compatible rims on the shelf.
If you're really hard on rims you might eventually run out of options. But if you're *that* hard on rims you should probably think hard about technique, pressures, etc... since riding any bike that way is going to be expensive. |
