I don't think the wound issue is BS. It's definitely much easier and less painful to deal w/ surgical tape, bandages, etc. without the hair for it to stick to.

That's because they were producing more power than you, though at a lower cadence. Power is a function of torque (the rotational force applied to the cranks) and the cadence.
