I would agree that it is not a problem; mostly a cosmetic one. My self-diagnosed OCD likes the protection of the tubing. I think the same reason dirty panniers end up bothering me after a long tour....

I do the cardboard box thing, too. If the tour is a loop I store it at my hotel til I return; for a point-to-point I pick up a new one at a bike shop and give them a pretty good tip.
