Cartridge is the only thing that will work on a spindle that short. I've had good luck with no-name cheapies off eBay or Amazon. I also have a 7410 crank.

You can make a "tap" at home by filing or grinding a slot in a steel screw (of the correct dimensions), and turning that in and out of the threaded hole. A dremel cutting disc makes this really easy....

The best shifting 7 speed freewheels are the ones being made now by Sunrace and similar. Correct spacing, HG ramps and chrome. They are cheap and work much better than an old Sachs or Dura Ace...

I doubt the spacing will be an issue. I've used 7 speed Shimano (5.0mm spacing) on Shimano 8 speed cassettes (4.8mm spacing) and there was no problem with shifting or noise.
