Make sure you like the position a road bike will put you in. Bent forward with a good amount of neck extension for hours isn't for everyone.

Agreed. I guess if the front wheel turned 90 degrees it might be enough to tip the whole thing over. That's my concern.

The second one would obviously be nice to use as a trainer during the winter

My priorities are ease of use/convenience and stability. I don't want the bike falling into my vehicles
