XT hubs were either 130 or 135 mm, so possibly DX were the same. If you decide to go for a modern MTB rear hub, I'm sure the steel frame can accept it without any problem.

The Horizon is a nice bike for the money, but the only chromoly of the bike is in the fork. Dawes stopped building the Horizon in steel years ago and the only steel Dawes bikes are the Galaxy series.
