It was possible in my case because the head tube had extra material above and below to take the cups I had made, and I could live with the fact that front was lifted by adding the cups,

That pin/hole play looks normal to me, I think it's the fact that the sprocket is not clamped tightly is why you are noticing it. Be interesting to see what you find with the crank out again.

Yes, quite a few MTB tracks and trails around, Brookvale probably the biggest, skiing in the winter and downhill/gravity trails in the summer. 400kms+ of cycle trails helps as well.
