Well yeah, the fuel analogy was an exaggeration. Fuel LINES might be a more appropriate one. I doubt that restoration a RUNNING classic vehicle would be devalued by installation of fresh replacements...

The brake hoods aren't "wrong", the levers themselves are. They appear to be Tektro or some equivalent, but they're obviously regular drop-bar levers; bullhorn / cut-off bars should have bar-end type...

You should consider re-wrapping the handlebar without the brake cables inside. Those levers were not designed for the cables to run that way. It looks like someone tried to create a fake "aero lever"...

Any markings on the dropouts? Was there anything stamped on the steerer tube?
