I've done the strap routing through the rear...

I've done the strap routing through the rear cages, I like em that way. It makes it a lot harder to pull out your feet, which can be a good and bad thing.

Sheldon Brown recommends you lower your saddle a tiny bit if you're using clipless, compared to clips&straps. When I adjusted, it made a huge difference.
