The worst v-brakes can be set up stronger than the most expensive road brakes. Either fix the ones on it or get nicer v-brakes, any other option will be a downgrade.

Why don't you just check and make sure the cog, lockring, chain, cranks, and bottom bracket are all tightened or tensioned properly. If your cranks are loose it safe to say you rounded them out...

I spent 20 minutes going at it with my bolt cutters and only cut one half of a link. I would still have to make another cut to actually get the chain apart. I haven't tried a hacksaw or angle grinder...
