OMG, this sounds awful. I'm open to a disc setup for a gravel bike but dreading this type of problem vs the simple rim brake. Maybe the next gen disc will simplify things more.

That plastic coating is a thin layer of carbon fiber. I have the same issue on my c24’s after about 5 years of riding them.

I actually think we will definitely continue to see rim brakes mostly on ultra high-end 10k+ bikes and discs more in the middle tier. Mostly for weight reasons and because rim brakes are far easier...
