The strobes cast a semi-sphere of pretty uniform light. The LED's cast a beam. Strobes also came about when LED's weren't a viable option.

Wiggle.UK has the D/A 7700 levers for ~$44. I have a set on the way for a similar build. With DT levers you can use friction as well, if not better, than indexing IME.

You could always switch to Mobil1 90w gear oil. Full synthetic and lighter than grease (but not much). A PITA, though. I've had good luck with a synthetic Finish Line grease.
