I know that! Smaller gears have always been hot. I'm saying 36/13 looks a whole lot better than 44/16. I am not talking about changing gear ratios.

Cassettes are freewheels with the ratchet in the hub. So you can have a 9T cassette and a 25T sprocket instead of 25/9.

I suppose, most GOOD 16T freewheels have 4 pawls. The highest count I a 13T I've found is 3 pawls (made by Odyssey, check Dans Comp). You're giving up durability for lighter weight, and that awesome...
