So, my main commuter is now a 3 speed. Got a downtube shifter for the 3 speed wheel I built up over the winter, and that's the solution to my second derailleur explosion on that bike....

KMC chains are great - the $10-15 chains for 6, 7 & 8 speed are plenty durable. Chains get far more expensive as they get narrower (ie. more 'speeds') with $80+ 12 speed chains.
