It's not a waste on a tandem. Tandems have an aero advantage over singles, and I suppose a triple has an even bigger one if all riders are adults. It's hard to get a top gear that is high enough.

Swaged is analogous to riveting, or maybe it's a synonym. I've only seen the rivet come undone once, and a mechanic just hammered it back together. In theory, it's much worse.
