Almost all of mine have balls. I only have one with roller bearings.

Many of the ones with balls have the balls inside a cartidge, but I do have a couple of cup n cone threadless headsets.

What worked for me is ditching those teeny tiny...

What worked for me is ditching those teeny tiny Gripshift stationary grips and running full length or nearly full length grips. The shortest I run is Oury slip-ons with the ribbed portion cut out.
