My only thinking in migrating to the 1030 is for the increased battery life. With the Varia attached to my three year old 520, battery life on the 520 is brutal.

Yeah, I read that somewhere too. As I am doing a lot of riding on urban streets, the 520 is going off all the time. Hence the backlighting. I am interested to hear how the change in settings works...

7 or 8 degrees is pretty much as low as I'll go. Definitely would not ride below 0. The risk of ice is too much for me. Plus I don't have the appropriate warm weather gear.
