its not uncommon, for speed to go up when you do something like this. Ignore it, concentrate on efficiency. If you go faster then you are pushing harder and will also tire quicker.

They are better if you puncture at speed.

I prefer leg warmers, because they are more versatile and cheaper in the long run. Make sure they fit well though and have good grippers or they keep coming down :(
