My first thought as well: on a fast turn, braking the front wheel applies a force to the fork that's at an angle to the direction of motion. The physics are beyond what I care to thrash out here....

Never liked tape - I switched to foam decades ago, and I would never go back. Only downside is having to remove the brake levers to install fresh grips, but that's not exactly brain surgery.
