Thanks for the replies , I hadn't thought about it before but the hub has been replaced, the bike still has the SA shifter.

I got 2 3 speed bikes at a yard sale today. The Ladies was made by Apollo Cycle Co. Birmingham England. The date on the SA hub is 10/63 . I can not find much info on the web for this...
