Anything particularly unsafe about flat bars

https://www.theoddspoke.com.au/tranzx-bar-ends-alloy-kraton-rubber

These will stop you being speared by an unprotected flat bar end and give you two or three extra hand positions!

What tip do you wish you had been given

What others have said, don't take too much stuff BUT have enough warm clothing to avoid hypothermia.
In a hypothermic emergency just pitch your tent and get into your sleeping bag asap

Advantage of upgrading from1980s bike

Well if you haven't worn out the braking surface on those rims in 35 years you ought not need disc brakes on your new bike!

What is the most difficult tyre you had to take off on a rim

I never had to resort to the LBS but they were not easy to install.
Once on however they lasted well and were reasonably puncture proof.

Rim Brakes on a touring bike

I swapped the cantis on my Surly LHT for V brakes.

While the cantis did a good job the V brakes require far less pressure on the levers.

Should the Crazyguy put up a paywall.

I know Neil's views on the subject. I started the thread because I wondered whether he would be better off with a paywall but the consensus here is in the negative.
