Is one better than the other? I've heard a lot of people say to suck it up and get used to a firm one. But the softer ones are just so much more comfortable...not sure how it is long term though.

Don't buy brand new, its not a good investment and you can easily get a high end all carbon road bike for $1000. I got a specialized tarmac sl pro for $1,000, bike only weighs 17 pounds.
