Just using a bell doesn't seem to impinge on the hearing of pedestrians hereabouts. The bell and "Excuse me! Coming through!" works better than the words alone, though - I guess it helps people...

That depends on the terrain as well, doesn't it? If you've got an entirely flat commute along a smoothly paved surface, it's going to be quite different than if you're navigating hills or muddy...
