I agree, have been wrenching bikes for 40+ years, and always properly adjust hubs(no play), and don't worry about the QR compressing the axle. IMHO the thin QR will elongate before the hollow steel...

Andy is right, I don't think your bike shop can give you a better answer. Remove the paint around the dent to determine if it is a crack, and if not, fill it in with Bondo, and touch up paint.
