I have a carbon fork of a 29er that I use for gravel riding. It works fine for gravel riding, but beats you up compared to a suspension fork. I wouldn't make that change for an off road bike.

I would not be afraid of a used bike. There really isn't much too them - as long as the fork and shock hold air and aren't leaking oil, there isn't much to be afraid of. Pivot bearings are cheap...
