I found the Park Tools book more helpful than the Zinn book. It's more straight forward IMHO. I found the Zinn book to have almost too much info. Plus it's easier to find stuff in the Park Tools book.

The reason it wouldn't pop back in is because of the ring on the pressure foot. I ultimately just removed the ring and the brake still seems to work fine.

I replaced a 7 speed freewheel with an 8 speed one and had to put an axle spacer on the freewheel side to keep it from rubbing against the dropout and now the wheel is offset to the left...
