I guess there is no real reason I would want or need many gears. I am going for something more simple since it will be used to move around town and campus. would it be possible/expensive to convert...

So as title suggests, I am currently searching CL for a good commuter bike, preferably a single speed. Rather than pay for a new bike, I am interested in something used, 70's, 80's, etc....
