I've used neatsfoot oil in the past but they will go too soft if you over do it. I'd try the cheap leather cleaner stuff from the supermarket or just lots of saddle soap.

I'd have a go at fixing it. I'd be more concerned about misalignment than loss of strength. You could braze a bolt onto the hammered-in section and pull it back out if you had facilities to do that....
