Oh, yeah, I suspect that electronic shifting is the wave of the future - I've already got it on one bike. But no company should put the cables under the tape if it results in such short cable life...

That indicates a faulty design, wouldn’t you say? Pushing back with warranty claims is one way to get Shimano to improve their products.
