Thanks, this will definitely be my approach. I had thought it to be fairly unremarkable but looking at it again it is in pretty good shape and rare considering what's floating around the used market...

Sakai LDT touring bike - "Staghead" mech

"Staghead" front & rear derailleurs (precursor to XT I believe?), Sugino GS crank. Decent cantis & lowrider bosses. Came with a Brooks too. Frame is Tange 900 and fork is Mangaloy 2001.

Depends. My drops are pretty high so I get on them whenever I can, but that's only really on straightaways. Any time there's any amount of handling involved, back to the goods I go.
