Lugged Multitrack frames can fit up to 48mm tires I believe. I am running 43mm GravelKings on my 1990 750 21" frame with no issues.

Yep, there weren't many manufacturers making frames in the US out of American-made steel, Treks and Schwinns (I have a Chicago-built Breeze myself) are historical artifacts in this country.

Or an early 90s lugged steel frame hybrid. $100-$250 can get you a Schwinn Crosscut or Trek Multitrack 750 that needs a bit of work and you'll have a nicer bike than a brand new entry level aluminum...
