Hanging by the front wheel is easier. Just lift the rear wheel off the ground a couple of inches, and the hand on the handlebar finds the hook. Rear wheel hang means more lifting, of the heavier end.

That's how I've always done it when brake flats...

That's how I've always done it when brake flats were not accessible or non-existent. We had a punch with a curve ground into it so it fit the spring better than a flat punch or flat blade screwdriver.
