Untill you mow down some little old lady or little kid. A bicycle on the sidewalk is as much a hazard to pedestrians as cars are to us on the road. Riding on sidewalks is illegal in my town.

I don't use studded tires and can get through an entire winter without bailing due to black ice. I have fallen before where studs would have helped but these times are exceptions not the rule IMO.

I would look more at the 20-30 mph range. Headwinds make difference in windchill. Riding 15 mph into a 10mph headwind is 25 mph windchill.

I use bandanas, neoprene facemasks and I have an old paintball mask. It's just goggles with a protective plate hanging down. Paintballs have gone up in power so coverage is much greater on new models.
