One option that hasn't been mentioned - upgrading your MTB tires (or tires in general) to something supple and minimal rolling resistance. Compass has a good line of 26" tires...

OK, so a large number of disk-compatible racks, including some child friendly racks, use a long built-in spacer. I noticed my wife's bike, whose rack does not state anything either way about child...

Wow, that implies a lot of torque is expected on those bolts. Does it say what to torque it to (ft-lb/Nm)?

For the record, that’s why I want to make this rack fit; it *is* child carrier safe...

Well said. I'll meditate on bending it. I'm still afraid I will imperceptibly weaken it, where if I use spacers I can at least trust the rack. But sleep might reduce my paranoia.

Nevermind, I get it now. At where the spacer meets the frame, there could be a lever force pulling away from the frame, pivoting on the bottom of the spacer. I think it would be small, and probably...

Actually, I'm new here, is that even "car free"? We just don't own a car, but we borrow or rent one at least monthly.

Well, my family is currently "car free." One point, we meet a lot of other car free people, and we all feel very fortunate to be able to live this way, nobody is judging anybody for having cars. Cars...

Cool, thanks for the datapoint!

I thought about that, but bending the stays ~14mm? I would if it was steel, but is that OK for aluminum (I don't know much about aluminum other than it's more...

Just to be clear, that's from the manual of the Planet Bike Versa-Rack prairiepedaler suggested, which I'm not considering. The rack under discussion and seen in the picture is the Giant Rack-It...

That's a good question. If everything stays tight, I imagine there wouldn't be any bending force on the bolt because the rack flange is against the spacer, which would have to compress in order to...

Is that a gut feeling? In general I understand that shear forces on bolts are quite high. An initial googling shows about 300lbs per M5 bolt, including big safety margins. I want to ask a mechanical...

I think I understand, and that's a pretty clever idea! Wouldn't be that hard to fabricate either. Just drill a hole through a small block (maybe 12mm cube, ish) and cut a gap in it to fit around the...

Oh thanks, see?! It's hard to find a rack that is intended for child carriers. My understanding, after internet research, is that's because the clamping forces of the carrier adapters could crumple...

Awesome rack! I hadn’t seen that one. Doesn’t have the lower bar, but that’s the least important feature.

I went looking for the measurements for the planet bike rack in the user manual, and saw...

Rear rack spacer - OK, or bad idea?

I've been searching far and wide for a rear rack that is:

1) rated child seat safe (i.e. thick-walled aluminum to handle seat clamping force),

2) short enough to sit just above the fender...

I've got 5,000 miles on this steed, and I just discovered this subforum! I love taking pictures of my hauls even though I don't have anywhere to put 'em, so here's a few.

Super proud of this...

Summary of thick-leathered saddle break-in techniques, and a sanity check for my idea

Yes, I know, yet another saddle-break-in post, but I think there's still value to add on the topic for thicker-leathered saddles.

TL;DR, let's brainstorm ways to break in a thick saddle in say <...

2000 miles on a brooks: is it broken in yet?

I just got in to longish-distance riding last summer, and considering all the positive reviews, I put down on a Brooks B17. I was in a saddle-trying phase, and out of the box I thought it was the...
