Thanks guys for sticking with me in this thread. With the comments of all, checked the cyclone II R deraileur and found GT stamped on the cage, so it looks like it'll work with the schwinn wheels....

Mike, you were right on! The ratchet drum was in backwards, turned it over, reassembled the shifter and rode it, everything worked as it should. Didn't even have to take the shifters off the stem....
