you can put thumbies on a drop bar. not 100% sure if that is what is being asked. Deore thumbies have a steel band which can be widened to fit on a drop bar. Shifting is similar to a road bike...

i wouldn't repaint it unless you're planning on doing a full restore. looks fine from here. the chainstay will be hidden by the crankset.

as mentioned above, its a deore XT 737. Works fine with the brifters since these older campy brifters don't index the FD. This is mostly intended to be an urban road bike...
