I've got a casette, and I'd like indexed shifting. 6-7-8 speed are compatible afaik, but 9 and above aren't. I've found some 8 speed Ultegra available, but not sure I wanna spend 70 quid on something...

That's the bodging part. :) These '89 XT thumbies' clamps are forged aluminum, so they aren't really bendable. Therefore I took my DX thumbies' clamps (steel), bent them up, found some longer screws...
