Trek switched to non-lugged frame and unicrown forks for the 520 sometime in the 90s. V-brakes were introduced in 99, so if this one has original components it's safe to say it's a 99 or later.

Lower tooth differences are always gonna shift smoother of course, but not so dramatically different that it’d be a deciding factor for me. My two highest mileage bikes both have/had 50/34 combos....

I always rode it with 23s, but surprisingly enough you could get away with 28s. The benefit of the split seat tube allows for the tire to fit right in between there.
